LJFF's House Three Thirty set to open Thursday in Akron

The LeBron James' Home Court museum is tucked in the lower level of House Three Thirty, located in the former Tangier entertainment complex. "There's a lot of pride in our city. There's a lot of pride in our program. The museum will feature mementos from his career and life growing up in Akron.

"We're trying to build something to where whatever you need, you're able to get in this area, and by being centrally located we want all of Akron to be able to come and join in." "You just have to take the time to care and learn and reach people where they are. That's what this training model is all about." The old Tangier entertainment complex is now the LeBron James Family Foundation House Three Thirty, a multi-purpose space for all to enjoy. Ransome said there are more plans underway to continue helping to support the community.

How much does LeBron's museum cost to tour?

"It should bring some pride. A kid from the projects bringing something like this to a city is huge, you know, it's really huge for the city, and I just hope people take advantage of that." DeLondia Feaster of Akron had her 45th birthday party in Tangier and was pleased to see that the foundation kept much of the historic building's integrity. One detail she admired were the picture frames in the main hallway, which were once adorned with photos and posters of entertainers who performed at the previous Akron restaurant and cabaret. The transformed space was created for I Promise families, the Akron community, and visitors from all over the world. "You'll see leather and natural stone. Over time, this building will only just gain more beauty and I think that's very poetic with what we're doing here with job training," says Katherine Reedy, lead designer of House Three Thirty. “We’re going to start doing some career workshops within the community to help people set themselves up for success, whether that’s resume writing, interview, etiquette," she said.

“House Three Thirty is for the entire community, so it’s important to us that we open our doors and share what we’re building as the renovation is in progress,” said Michele Campbell, executive director of the LeBron James Family Foundation. “We are so excited about the opportunities, jobs, and experiences House Three Thirty is going to provide for our I Promise families and everyone who visits. House Three Thirty, immediately to the right, is a spacious area where JP Morgan Chase will provide financial planning assistance for I Promise families and community members. At 17 years, Chase is the foundation’s longest partner, Campbell said, so it’s appropriate that the financial institution be the first brand visitors see.

"At the end of the day, we were running out of time. Ukraine's getting ready to fall." Majority Leader Chuck Schumer celebrated the bipartisan success of the passage of the foreign aid package Tuesday evening during a late-night press conference following the vote. Thirty-one Republicans joined with 48 Democrats to pass the legislation. That's nine more Republicans than supported the aid package when the Senate last considered it in February. Two Democrats -- Sens. Jeff Merkley and Peter Welch -- as well as independent Sen. Bernie Sanders voted against the legislation along with 15 Republicans.

LeBron James' House Three Thirty in former Tangier to open for public tours on March 30

The Cabaret performance area, where Akronites saw many national acts, will retain much of its character from its Tangier days, as a tribute to the George family, who owned Tangier for decades, Campbell said. Anyone who ever went to Tangier for a banquet likely walked down the hallway lined with autographed photos of movie stars, TV personalities and musicians. Now, that hallway is lined with empty frames, to enable people who come to House Three Thirty to create new memories, Campbell said. In another area, a bookshelf becomes a hidden doorway into a secret coffee room, which will double as a conference space. Teachers will be encouraged to bring in their favorite coffee recipes to try out, she said.

As for how the foundation decided what businesses, event spaces and resources would be included at House Three Thirty, Campbell pointed to the needs of Akron families. This was the first chance for a glimpse at the transformation of what had been the landmark Tangier, a longtime Akron restaurant, nightclub and event space which the foundation bought in December of 2020. The LeBron James Family Foundation opened its House Three Thirty doors to the public Wednesday, during what it called a 330 Day celebration. The museum tracks his journey from his early “Fab Five” days in Akron with St. Vincent – St. Mary’s High School, to the Olympics, “Shooting Stars” and all points in-between. James’ NBA draft and career stops with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers are a part of the immersive experience. The long-term plan, Campbell said, is to build further vitality into the city and within its families with a range of supports, from education to housing.

House Three Thirty will open in stages to enable trainees to adapt comfortably while they continue to train, the foundation said. A barber shop and beauty parlor with braiding station are also on hand, enabling trainees to sign up for appointments. To enable trainees to look their best is part of the support House Three Thirty is designed to provide. According to the LeBron James Family Foundation, "I Promise students, teachers, parents, and family members that have been preparing for employment at House Three Thirty through LJFF’s Training Camp by Graduate Hotels & Saira Hospitality." Dining, retail, entertainment, arts, and mentorship are all a part of the experience. It's a one-stop shop for anything and everything that better supports the Akron community.

The community space is located in the former Tangier event center on West Market Street in downtown Akron. The 60,000 square-foot building has been renovated and reimagined as a community space that provides I Promise Program families with job training and mentorship, while offering dining, retail, arts and entertainment for community members. Services will include family financial health programming and job training opportunities through the venue’s retail, dining and event spaces.

All of this will be supported by a 10,000-square-foot kitchen — billed as one of the largest of its kind in Northeast Ohio — that is literally being built from the ground up inside of the old Tangier. The eatery is expected to open to the public once work is completed next year on the other spaces. The Smucker Hometown Hall event and rental space has already hosted some weddings, parties and graduations. Reservations can be made online or purchased at the House Three Thirty as long as slots are available. The museum dedicated to that "just a kid from Akron" is ready to open and welcome visitors.

The ticketed attraction also will house James' personal memorabilia from his storied sports and business career. The basement will house the LeBron James Museum by Upper Deck that will tell the NBA superstar's story from growing up in public housing in the Spring Hill neighborhood to his years at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School through his professional career including championships in Miami, Cleveland and with the Los Angeles Lakers. When that happens remains to be seen as workers continue to renovate the spacious venue.

The retail shop will also exclusively sell Savannah James' BBZ Juicery drinks. The ultimate goal of the House Three Thirty is to provide a safe and welcoming space for partner families and —for the first time — a place the public can also enjoy. All this is part of a layered approach by the foundation to assist hundreds of Akron school kids not only stay in school but achieve a high school diploma and at the same time to assist their families too, foundation Executive Director Michele Campbell. "He tried to do what the, you know, say the Freedom Caucus wanted him to do. It wasn't going to work in the Senate or the White House," Republican Rep. Michael McCaul, the House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman, said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

Some of the first visitors included LeBron James' mother, Gloria, as well as former St. Vincent-St. Mary basketball teammate and LeBron James Family Foundation employee Willie McGee. “You see everybody, all kinds of nationalities, Black, white, we’re all getting along, and I think it’s great,” he said. That sense of unity was echoed by Kenneth McKenzie, who attended Saturday’s activities with his family. “This is our way of pouring back into the community and thanking everyone for believing in us and trusting us to build this fine establishment right in the heart of Akron,” said Monique Ransome, director of community relations at House Three Thirty. Officials say House Three Thirty will act as a community centerpiece that will encourage current and future generations of residents to achieve their goals and spur further growth and development.
